ABC's of Kindergarten

The ABC’S of Kindergarten

A-Attendance

Please take special note of the attendance policy in the student handbook. Students are only allowed to miss 10 days of school. If your child needs to be absent, then please call the school office, 918-272-1153, to let them know that your child will not be there.

B-Backpacks

Each child will need a backpack in order to carry his/her binder/folder home daily. Rolling backpacks are not recommended. Please make sure the backpack is big enough to carry a binder and a lunch pail. Please do NOT remove the transportation tag from your child’s backpack that I will put on during the first week of school. This helps teachers in the building know where your child should be at the end of the day.

C-Car Riders

Kindergarten car riders will be dismissed at 3:45 each day. A few of the kindergarten teachers will walk the kindergarten car riders to the kindergarten car pick-up line. To get in the kindergarten car pick-up line, please enter the east driveway and U-Turn in the first parking lot in the back.  If there are older siblings, you will pull up and wait for them in the cutout until they are dismissed.  As stated in the Barnes Pick up procedures:

  • Your child will be in the office at 4:00 if you are late picking up. In that event, you will need to park in a space

& come inside the office to get them. Please call the office to let them know you will be late.

D-Drop Off

If you drop your child off in the morning, then please drop him/her off at the back doors of the building. The earliest your child can be dropped off is 8:30. When entering the building, your child will go to his/her locker unless they are eating breakfast, in which case they will need to go to the cafeteria. We begin dismissing to class at 8:55 and your child must be in the classroom by 9:00. If they arrive after this time, then they will be counted tardy. If your child is tardy, then you must get a tardy slip in the office.

E-Email

A great way to keep in touch with me is through e-mail. My school e-mail address is [email protected]

F-Fun Fantastic Fridays
We have a great time on Fun Fantastic Fridays! We visit the library, enjoy Science and Social studies Lessons and sometimes go to a "WIN" lab with computers!

G-Grading
At the end of each quarter your child will receive a report card/progress report. It will come home in his/her binder. This report card is performance based and will be an on-going assessment throughout the school year.  If you have any questions or concerns about your child's progress,  please e-mail me.

H-Homework
Homework will be sent home in your child’s binder for reading and usually begins in October. Thank you for your support in this procedure. Homework in kinder is simply reading with your child.

I-Illness
The question of when to keep your child home from school is often a difficult one, especially when decisions must be made first thing in the morning. It is important to keep your child home if he/she is ill. This helps them to be more comfortable and prevents other children and teachers from becoming ill. Children function more effectively in the classroom when they are healthy. If they have been ill, they must be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school.

J-Join PTO
Barnes Elementary has a Parent Teacher Organization. Meetings will be held throughout the school year. Please watch for the notes that they send home. This group of volunteers is a vital part of the success of our school! PLEASE JOIN!

K-Kindness

Students in our classroom are expected to treat all members of our class, as well as others in the school building, with kindness and respect; hitting, fighting, name-calling, and making fun of others will not be permitted. I will talk about the "Magic Triad", which includes kind words, kind touches, and smiles. It makes our classroom a magical place!

L-Lunch

The school will provide breakfast and lunch each day for the children who wish to purchase one. For convenience, you may pay by the week or by month. Checks are made payable to Barnes Elementary or you can pay online. Free or reduced food applications are available in the cafeteria. There are four main dish choices each day. A monthly menu is provided on owassops website each month. Carbonated drinks or drinks in glass containers are not encouraged in the lunchroom.

M-Munchies

We will have a snack each afternoon. Please see calendar in folder so you know when it is your turn to provide class snacks.. Snacks must be store bought and come in a sealed package.  (Individually wrapped snacks are wonderful if it is budget friendly for you).  Thank you for providing snacks for our hungry kindergartners!

N-Notes

Your child will bring home his/her binder every day. This is a great place to put your notes that are addressed to me. If your child is going home a different way, please make sure to write a note or call the office at 272-1153. If I do not receive a note, then your child will be sent home his/her regular way. Also, if your child happens to be riding a bus home with a friend, then please make sure to write a note giving your child permission. Please remember that I only check binders, not backpacks.

O-Open House

We will be having an open house night on Sept. 12th from 6:00-7:00. This is also an opportunity to visit our Fall Book Fair in the Library.

P-Parties

We will have 2 parties this school year. Our PTO will be helping with our parties this year, more info to come!.

Q-Questions

If you have any questions, then please feel free to contact me. You can contact me at school between the hours of 8:30 to 4:00. Please e-mail me or call the school at 918-272-1153.

R-Recess

We will have recess at 11:10 each day (weather permitting).  Please be sure your child has on appropriate shoes and clothing per the weather.

S-Specials

Your child will go to gym, music, or computer each afternoon. For your child’s safety, please make sure your child wears tennis shoes on the days we have gym.

T-Toys

Children are asked to not bring toys from home. They are very distracting. I cannot be responsible for broken/stolen toys and/or hurt feelings caused by them.

U-“U”

“U” are important in your child’s education. Thank you for all of your support!

V-Volunteers

Volunteers are amazing and much needed!!! I ask volunteers to make copies, put paper books together, cut items out, etc… If you missed this sign-up sheet at Meet the Teacher and would like to volunteer, then please e-mail me or write me a note in order to let me know when you are available to help!

W-Wear

It is strongly encouraged that students wear tennis shoes or closed toe shoes for their safety. We go to the playground every day, weather permitting, and gym class every third day. Flip-flops are not appropriate and they are not safe shoes for your child to wear at school.  Please consider leaving extra jewelry at home, including watches.  Slap on bracelets are not useful for the learning environment for your child and his/her classmates.

X-Extra Clothes

It is very important that you send an extra set of clothes in case of a bathroom accident or a messy spill. This way we do not have to bother you at your work or home. These clothes will stay in your child’s locker on the top shelf. Please send seasonally appropriate clothing for the weather. Please write a name on everything you send to school so that if it is misplaced, it can be returned.

Y-You

You and your child are both important to me. Thank you for sharing your child with me and allowing me to be a part of their life. It is an honor and my pleasure to hold the title of "Kindergarten Teacher" and I am so very thankful for YOU!

Z-ZZZZZs

Make sure your child gets plenty of rest. A kindergarten room is a busy place and you will probably find your child exhausted at the end of the day. Setting and keeping a bedtime routine is a wonderful gift you can give your child. It will help them be alert and ready to learn each day! This is also a great time to read to your child!
