Kindergarten Homework

Kindergarten Homework

I will notify you when Kindergarten Homework begins.

There will be a "homework pocket" in the back of your child's binder, along with a homework description and  log sheet for an adult to sign each Monday through Thursday that homework is assigned.

LETTERS

Letter identification will be a skill we work on first. We practice learning the names of capital and lower case letters and learn all of their sounds in kindergarten. Sometimes letter activities are sent in the homework pocket to practice at home as well.

SIGHT WORDS

Sight words will be a skill we begin early on as well. Sight words are words that we learn to recognize by sight because they often do not follow typical spelling rules. The lists will be placed in your child's binder behind the calendar for easy access. Children will progress at their own pace.

READING

In Kindergarten we learn to read with the use of many resources. I love to teach reading so much and can't wait to begin the adventure this year with your little one!

Reading homework will be simple and include things like practicing letter sounds, memorizing beginning sight words, reading a developmentally appropriate book or listening to a book read by a parent. I want the introduction to reading to be pleasant and not dreadful. I want to host a place for your child that develops a love for learning. I look forward to working by your side as we make this an exciting kindergarten experience for your child.

I would like to explain a few things to help you understand your part in your son/daughter’s reading.
In the beginning of our reading program your child will bring home letters to name and identify sound then progress to sight words. They need to be able to say the name, sounds or words correctly when they see them. They don’t need to be able to spell the sight words.  Every week their progress will be monitored and additional letters or words will be assigned as they progress. Please practice these letters or words with your child each day.

Eventually, your child will bring home a book in their "Homework Pocket".  Sometimes they may bring home the same book more than once and sometimes it will be a new book. I am asking that your child read to an adult, not sisters or brothers. This way they will be getting the help that they need as they are beginning to read.  I would like for them to point to each word as they read and sometimes they will have brought home a pointer to a light to help them to remember to do this (which will also need to be kept in pocket for daily use) Please be sure to return the book to the homework pocket after they read their book.
